However, it is extremely common with around 50% of women affected . Thankfully there are several effective home remedies for the treatment of postpartum hair loss that will boost your hair growth and hopefully your confidence with it. Postpartum hair loss specifically effects women after giving birth or for many during pregnancy itself. It may be a gradual process, or more sudden with clumps of hair falling out often when you shower or brush your hair. Postpartum hair loss may start anywhere within two to five months postpartum but the good news is that for most the hair loss is temporary and regrowth occurs after 6 months, but just to be safe, try our postpartum hair loss remedies for an effective treatment.
What causes postpartum hair loss?
Giving birth is the main reason of postpartum hair loss. When a woman is pregnant, her estrogen levels increase. This increase of estrogen in the body will ‘suspend’ the hair in its growing phase, which is why hair is thick and lustrous when pregnant.
So instead of the usual small amount of fall-out that occurs in hair every day (on average it is thought 100 hairs fall out over the course of a day), your hair will effectively ‘stay put’ during pregnancy resulting in thicker healthier looking hair. The down-side is that after giving birth your estrogen levels decline as does the normal ‘cycle’ of hair growth and loss. The result is more hair than normal will fall out, often in quite large clumps.
The down-side is that after giving birth your estrogen levels decline as does the normal ‘cycle’ of hair growth and loss. The result is more hair than normal will fall out, often in quite large clumps.
In some cases, hair loss may be induced by telogen effluvium. Telogen effluvium or thinning hair, is a point when the roots of the hair are prematurely pushed from their growing phase to their resting phase. This resting phase is called “telogen.” This may happen to about 30 to 50 percent of women during their postpartum period and is mainly thought to be a result of stress and anxiety brought on by childbirth.
Postpartum Hair Loss Remedies
Although postpartum hair loss is not permanent there are some quick and easy remedies to keep your hair looking as healthy as possible postpartum.
1)Enjoy a healthy diet
Eating well postpartum is important to keep your strength up, particularly for women that breastfeed. But it will also help maintain healthy, strong hair and hopefully lesson any postpartum hair loss. A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and healthy proteins is ideal but below are the top five superfoods to include:
- Blueberries contain antioxidants and high levels of Vitamin C which will help stimulate circulation of the scalp. Blueberries are also an excellent home remedy for postpartum depression.
- Leafy Greens such as kale, spinach, and cabbage are rich in iron, beta-carotene and vitamin C all of which will help strengthen hair and boost its shine and luster.
- Salmon is rich in something called Omega-3 fatty acids which are fish oils that help keep both your skin and hair hydrated and healthy.
- Carrots contain beta-carotene and also Vitamin A which help stimulate the production of healthy sebum needed by the scalp
- Eggs (as mentioned below) are rich in vitamins, proteins, and fatty acids all of which are vital to nourish your hair after giving birth.
2) Onion juice
Yes, as unpleasant as it sounds onion juice is thought to help maintain healthy hair. Onions are rich in sulphur – a mineral thought to increase nourishment and shine in hair. They also have anti-bacterial properties to help with scalp infections that might lead to further hair loss.
Peel and cut the onions and blend into a paste. Squeeze the paste through a fine sieve to extract any juice. Then massage the juice into the scalp and leave for five to ten minutes.
Studies have shown the raw juice has had a significant impact on hair growth of alopecia sufferers.
3) Indian Gooseberry or Alma
Indian gooseberry or Amla is used in Ayurvedic medicine and is particularly beneficial to hair growth. It is thought to strengthen the roots of hair, maintain color, and improve shine. Alma oil contains carotene, iron and anti-oxidants all of which help reduce damage and hair loss.
Clinical Studies have demonstrated a herbal taken from the gooseberry effectively stimulates hair growth and promotes hair health.
If available you can either eat fresh alma or purchase the oil from a good natural medicine shop which can then be rubbed onto the scalp and roots.
Eggs are rich in proteins, vitamins and fatty acids that help nourish hair, prevent breakage, and aid growth by restoring the natural oils present in the hair and scalp.Eggs can be used for hair growth in two ways; either by being included in your daily diet or by being used in a hair pack.
If you have very oily hair it may be best to use just the egg whites for your hair pack. On the other hand for dry and damaged hair, the egg yolks will act as a moisturizer to nourish and protect your hair.
Simply crack one or two eggs in a bowl with a small amount of olive oil. Mix well and apply to scalp and the roots of your hair and leave for around twenty to thirty minutes. Wash off with cool water before following with your usual shampoo and conditioning routine.
5) Fenugreek seeds or leaves
The fenugreek leaves and seeds contain vitamins B, C and E alongside zinc and biotin. All these nutrients are said to help maintain healthy hair and prevent postpartum hair loss.
Clinical studies on fenugreek extract have shown positive results for promoting hair regrowth.
In addition, fenugreek is said to remove dryness on the scalp, cure dandruff and condition hair.
Fenugreek is normally found in seeds. These can be soaked overnight before being made into a paste which can be applied to the scalp and hair and left for up to thirty minutes.
6) Brewer’s yeast
As unappealing as it sounds, it has been said that the yeast found in beer has many nutritional properties including helping strengthen the hair postpartum and aiding in hair loss.
Brewer’s yeast is so called because it is an essential ingredient in beer-making. Its official name is Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and it is particularly rich in vitamin B, biotin (which contains keratin and aids cell growth) and folic acid all of which aim in the prevention of postpartum hair loss.
Studies using medicinal yeast have demonstrated that yeast can prevent hair loss and promote regrowth.
The Licorice root, which has apparently been used by Ancient Egyptians since 3rd century B.C., is said to be very soothing for dry, irritated skin, perfect for getting rid of dandruff or an irritated scalp. Because it is also said to help open pores and strengthen the hair shaft, it is also thought to be a great home remedy for postpartum hair loss.
A study comparing licorice extract to the commercially sold hair-growth drug Minoxidil showed licorice to be the winner.
The easiest way to use licorice is to buy Licorice Extract from a good health store and add a little of the extract to your usual shampoo. You then massage your scalp and the roots of your hair to hopefully leave your hair healthy and strong.
8) Coconut Oil
Coconut Oil contains lauric acid, a fatty acid thought to protect your hair and help prevent postpartum hair loss. It helps bind hair proteins which in turn protect the hair’s root and prevents breakage. Coconut oil is also rich in vitamin E, vitamin K and iron. One major effect of coconut oil is thought to be that it aids blood circulation in the scalp which creates an ideal environment for healthy hair growth.
It is possible to use coconut oil in your diet so you ingest all the good nutrients or you can simply add a little coconut oil to your shampoo to help improve your hair’s softness and shine and protect the scalp against dryness and dandruff.
9) Peppermint oil
Peppermint oil is a great moisturizer and studies suggest that it may also help stimulate the growth of hair making it a good and natural method to fight off hair loss without experiencing toxicity. Add several drops of Peppermint oil to your usual shampoo each time you wash your hair to increase its strength and shine.
10) Moisturize your hair
Moisturizing the hair is important. Un-Moisturized hair can lead to dry, brittle hair that is prone to breakage. During postpartum hair loss, it is important to prevent further damage so using a sensitive, natural hair moisturizer is ideal.
11) Get a hair cut and avoid styling too much
Although cutting your hair is not going to help with hair loss, it will obviously cut away all damaged locks leaving a shorter, easier to maintain hair-style.
It might also be an idea to put damaging styling aids away for a few months. Hot curling or straightening irons and even blow dryers can damage the hair and also make it appear thinner. Excessive brushing should also be avoided to prevent further hair loss.
- Keep hydrated.
- Give your scalp a regular oil massage.
- Eat healthily and nutritious food
- Exercise regularly.
- Cut down the consumption of caffeine and alcohol
- Clean your combs frequently.
- Trim your hair to prevent split ends.
- De-stress as anxiety causes further hair loss.
- Wear a shower cap while swimming in the pool.
- Avoid washing hair with hot water.
- Don’t use styling products excessively, as they damage hair.
- Cut down your meat consumption
- Avoid blow drying, as it damages hair follicles.
- Avoid brushing wet hair.

Yet stretch marks are not only the most common but also the most permanent side effect of giving birth. About 50 to 90 percent of the women are said to develop stretch marks during pregnancy. You may be lucky, with elastic skin that quickly recovers to your normal figure, but more likely than not, your skin will begin to show the tell-tale signs of damage from stretching. Don’t wait to find out. The treatment of stretch marks should start in early pregnancy, as prevention is far better than cure. Follow our home remedies for stretch marks as soon as you discover your joyful news and you can prevent stretch marks before they appear.
What Causes Stretch Marks?
Before heading towards the home remedies for stretch marks, it is important to understand why and how pregnancy causes them. Pregnancy stretch marks are no different than the regular stretch marks that you get at any point in your life. Stretch marks usually appear when your body gains or loses excessive weight. During pregnancy, the baby is continuously growing in the womb causing the skin to stretch beyond its normal capacity.
Ultimately, excessive stretching leads to the tearing of the middle layer of the skin (known as the dermis) as it is not able to keep up with the required growth rate of the baby. This tearing causes the deeper layers of the skin to become visible. This results in ugly looking stretch marks, particularly on the breast and belly areas.
People normally recommend going through several surgical and chemical treatments to remove these pregnancy stretch marks. Some of these treatment options include abdominoplasty, fractional laser treatment, vascular laser and more. However, there are a lot of problems associated with these options. Not only are they expensive but also have a lot of risks associated with them.
The best option is to opt for some popular home remedies to prevent stretch marks which as equally effective, safe and cheaper. Keep reading to know more about them!

Hence, in these circumstances, the demand for water intake is increased to a great extent.
Your skin, just like other organs in the body, requires water to maintain elasticity. Hence, it is recommended that you drink a lot of water every day throughout the entire pregnancy in order to maintain elasticity and consequently the stretch marks. Water keeps your skin soft and soft skin are less vulnerable to developing stretch marks.
You can keep a check on the hydration level by paying attention to your body. Feeling dryness in the throat or around lips is a classic sign of dehydration. Similarly, you often find yourself feeling tired and are unable to concentrate on different tasks while suffering from dehydration. According to the Institute of Medicine, the recommended daily intake of water for women is 72 ounces but it may vary from person to person.
Remember that caffeinated drinks such as a coffee cannot help you in maintaining adequate hydration. Such beverages can, in fact, increase the risk of getting stretch marks, so remember to avoid them. Additionally, it will keep the hormone production in order and cause sweating in order to get rid of harmful toxins from the body. Be sure to consult your doctor about which exercises are best-suited to you and your pregnancy first.
- Get Some Aloe Vera
Why is aloe vera considered as one of the best home remedies to prevent pregnancy stretch marks? This magical herb has effective properties to aid in the healing process and produce visible results only in a matter of days. Moreover, it has soothing properties on the skin. Using aloe vera keeps the hydration levels high as well.

Repeat the process twice every day. You can also mix aloe vera with oil taken from vitamin E and A capsules. Apply the mixture on the affected skin and let it absorb completely to get results.
- Make Sugar Scrub
Consider making sugar scrub among other home remedies to prevent pregnancy stretch marks. Mix 1 tablespoon of sugar with some drops of lemon juice. Add a little almond oil and mix the solution thoroughly. Use this mixture on the areas where the stretch marks are expected to disappear. The scrub will exfoliate your skin and keep it in a healthy state.
- Use Petroleum Jelly
Petroleum Jelly is considered as one of the best home remedies to prevent pregnancy stretch marks due to its occlusive nature. This means that it has an ability to lock moisture within the skin and in this way, it can help heal dry or stretched skin.
All you have to do is scoop out some petroleum jelly and rub it on the risky areas. Massage it gently into the skin for 5 to 10 minutes. Repeat this process every night right before going to bed.
- Try Gelatin
Gelatin is among the best home remedies to prevent pregnancy stretch marks because it enhances collagen formation. Formation of collagen is essential to improve the elasticity of your skin. More females are likely to get stretch marks right after their pregnancy mainly because their diet does not contain enough amount of collagen.
So, how can you provide your body with more gelatin? One way to do this is to consume bone broth. Make some for yourself and consume it every day directly. You can also use it for making gravies, sauces, soups and casseroles. Try putting some in your rice to give it an amazing taste. If you don’t want to use broth, try using gelatin powder to your drinks.
Consuming gelatin would not only help improve the elasticity of the skin, it can also cause other benefits to your body. These benefits include improving sleep, aiding in wound healing, enhancing the insulin sensitivity, promoting health, reducing inflammation, and treating joint pain.
- Rely on Vitamin C
Your body needs vitamin C to form cartilage and collagen. It is also an effective agent for fighting free radicals and lessening the damage. Free radicals are dangerous to your body as they can destroy elastin and collagen from the skin and make the skin more vulnerable to developing stretch marks.
Vitamin C is considered among the greatest home remedies to prevent pregnancy stretch marks. If you are considering to try out this remedy, there is some good news. You can get all the vitamin C that your body needs from natural foods. All you need to do is to make sure you eat foods rich in this vitamin. These foods can include guava, turnips, parsley greens, kale, red bell peppers, broccoli and green bell peppers.
- Make Zinc Your Buddy
Did you know that zinc deficiency is one of the most common causes of developing stretch marks during pregnancy?
Zinc is a trace mineral that occurs naturally in your body. In fact, it makes up for one of the most abundant minerals of the human body. Your body requires it in high levels to produce collagen. Additionally, it also has antioxidant properties to keep your skin free from damage.
Include zinc supplementation among other home remedies to prevent pregnancy stretch marks and incorporate zinc-rich foods in your daily diet. You can start off by consuming shrimps, spinach, flax seeds, kidney beans, oysters and pumpkin seeds.
- Try Using Body Brush
Using a body brush can stimulate lymph and blood in your body. It also helps to eliminate toxins and increase the functionality of sweat glands and helps in skin exfoliation. All of these consequently make the skin soft and smooth and prevents the development of pregnancy stretch marks.
In addition to the above-mentioned home remedies to prevent pregnancy stretch marks, here are some extra tips for all the expecting mothers to follow:
- Limit your intake of corticosteroid medications.
- Avoid using harsh chemicals on your skin.
- Consume a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables.
- Increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids.
- Follow an active lifestyle and exercise every day.

The post 8 Effective Home Remedies for Impetigo appeared first on Natural Home Remedies - DIY treatment for Better Health.]]> Impetigo is a bacterial skin infection that is especially common among young children: it is the fourth most common dermatological skin disorder for children who seek medical help via general practice (1). An impetigo infection is typically caused by the Streptococcus or Staphylococcus bacteria, which can enter the human skin through a rash, minor cuts or scrapes, or an insect bite. Impetigo is highly contagious, and can spread between humans via personal contact, and by the sharing of towels, razors or clothing items. Since impetigo symptoms typically emerge only after four to 10 days, someone who has been exposed to the bacteria often spreads it to classmates, colleagues, family, and friends unintentionally (2). Since the symptoms of impetigo are caused by bacteria, there are many home remedies for impetigo that can treat the infection at home that you should try.
A 2005 review by the World Health Organization Department of Child and Adolescent Health and Development noted that impetigo is an endemic disease in many tropical and subtropical countries (3), but is also common in the developed world. Children are most susceptible, but also individuals affected by diabetes or a weakened immune system (e.g. due to HIV infection or chemotherapy) are also prone to catch the disease.
There are two types of impetigo: non-bullous impetigo (the most common manifestation) and bullous impetigo.
The symptoms of the non-bullous impetigo include the formation of itchy red sores (typically around the nose and mouth, but other areas may also be affected). After quickly bursting, these stores leave behind thick and golden crusts, which are commonly compared to cornflakes stuck to the skin. After drying out, the crusts leave behind a red mark that fades without scarring.
The symptoms of bullous impetigo involve the appearance of itchy and occasionally painful fluid-filled blisters (bullae) across the central part of the torso, or on the arms and legs. The blisters usually burst after a few days of quickly spreading, leaving behind a yellow crust that eventually fades without scarring. Bullous impetigo is more commonly accompanied by fever and swollen glands.
In most cases, a child’s compromised appearance as a result of impetigo will worry parents and prevent him or her from attending school or kindergarten. Most children can recover from the condition without treatment in between two to three weeks. Impetigo treatment (usually via antibiotic creams or antibiotic tablets) is nevertheless recommended to reduce the risk of the infection spreading to others, and to hasten the recovery process (4).
In rare instances, however, an alternative choice of treatments may be needed to cope with the outbreaks caused by strains of resistant bacteria (e.g. Methicillin-resistant staph aureus (MRSA)). In particularly rare and acute incidences of impetigo, permanent skin damage and scarring, swollen lymph nodes and kidney inflammation or failure can occur.
For mild cases, you can treat the symptoms of impetigo with home remedies that are naturally anti-bacterial.
Home Remedies for Impetigo
- Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple Cider Vinegar has proven bacteriostatic and bactericidal properties against food-borne pathogenic bacteria (5). While any white vinegar will do, apple cider vinegar is the best home remedy for impetigo as it has more potent anti-bacterial properties.
You can create your own anti-bacterial solution with vinegar to accelerate the healing of your skin sores and blisters while keeping the affected area clean and preventing the germs from spreading to other parts of your body.
To create your homemade antibacterial solution, simply mix one tablespoon of white distilled vinegar in 2 cups of lukewarm water. Wash the affected area with a cotton ball dabbed in this solution, and then pat your skin dry. You can cover the area with gauze, and repeat the process two to three times each day until the infection has subsided.
- Grapefruit Seed Extract and Geranium Oil
A 2004 study that was published in Burns, a scientific journal, attempted to establish the anti-bacterial efficacy of using patchouli, tea tree, geranium, lavender essential oils and citricidal (grapefruit seed extract) – separately and in combination – against three strains of Staphylococcus aureus (6). The study concluded that a combination of grapefruit seed extract and geranium oil demonstrated the strongest anti-bacterial effects against MRSA, a resistant strain of bacteria that can cause impetigo.
To benefit from this potent mixture, add a few drops of grapefruit seed extract to two tablespoons of geranium oil. Use a cotton ball to apply the mixture to the affected area 2 or 3 times each day to clean the infection and prevent it from spreading.
Ginger, the rhizome of the Zingiber officinale, has been used in traditional medicine practices across the world since ancient times. It is also a fantastic home remedy for impetigo as it is so readily available. While scientists are still attempting to understand the exact mechanism of its actions in combating various diseases and promoting health, its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antimicrobial, anti-diabetic, gastroprotective, anti-emetic and neuroprotective properties have been proven by scientific research (7).
To benefit from ginger’s antimicrobial potential against pathogens, you can incorporate it into your diet by adding it to soups, curries, smoothies, salad dressings and fruit and vegetable juices.
Turmeric contains the active ingredient of curcumin, which is known for its potent antibacterial antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties (8). You can benefit specifically from its efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus: the strain of bacteria that is often responsible for impetigo.
Simply mix one teaspoon of ground turmeric with one tablespoon of coconut oil, and then dab the affected areas with a cotton ball. Use a bandage to cover the area, since turmeric can stain your clothes. Rinse the area daily and reapply the solution once or twice a day. This will help alleviate the itching and discomfort while reducing any inflammation and preventing it from spreading to other parts of your body.
- Manuka Honey
Likewise, Manuka honey has been proven to contain antibacterial components that interrupt the cell division processes of the methicillin-resistant staph aureus (MRSA) (9). It is so good that it is routinely used in by medical practitioners for a wide variety of skin abrasions (such as minor burns, turf and carpet burns). As with turmeric, you can apply drops of Manuka honey to the affected area with a cotton ball to inhibit the bacterial growth responsible for your impetigo infection.
- Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil, an essential oil steam distilled from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia (which has long been used as an antimicrobial agent by Australian aborigines. A 2000 study published in the Journal of Hospital Infection found that a combination of a 4% tea tree oil nasal ointment and 5% tea tree oil body wash was more effective in eradicating MRSA than the standard prescription antibiotic treatments of mupirocin and triclosan (10).
To help alleviate impetigo caused by MRSA, apply a mixture of tea tree and olive oil (add a few drops of the former to one tablespoon of the latter) to the affected area with a cotton ball. After allowing it to sit for half an hour, rinse off the solution with lukewarm water. Repeat the process two to three times each day throughout the week.
- Garlic and Tazma Honey
A 2003 study demonstrated the synergic antibacterial effect of Apis mellipodae honey (honey from the Ethiopian stingless bee) and garlic mixture against the standard and clinical pathogenic bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus (11).
To benefit from this traditional Ethiopian remedy (which is also used for colds, coughs, asthma, diarrhea and respiratory infections), use a sterile mortar and pestle to obtain garlic juice from fresh garlic bulbs. Mix the juice with sterile distilled water and tazma honey, and then apply the solution to the affected area with a cotton ball. After allowing it to sit for half an hour, rinse off the solution with lukewarm water. Repeat the process two to three times each day throughout the week.
A 2012 study conducted by researchers at the University of North Carolina’s Department of Chemistry/Biochemistry demonstrated the antimicrobial and antiseptic activities of goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis leaf extract, which is used traditionally to treat skin infections) against MRSA (12). To benefit from its ability to target pathogens via multiple pathways, first make a strong tea solution with hot water. After it cools, use a cotton ball or pad to gently dab over the affected area. Do this twice each day throughout the week.
Do’s and Don’ts of Impetigo
- Wash your hands often and maintain good personal hygiene practices, such as having a daily bath or shower
- Maintain a healthy diet that includes ample amounts of fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins to ensure a strong, healthy and optimized immune system
- Avoid infections by washing all cuts, scratches and insect bites with warm water and soap
- Recuperate at home: avoid going to school, the gym, the nursery, or workplace if you have impetigo
- Keep any sores, blisters and crusty patches dry and clean by covering them with gauze bandages or loose clothing

Sperm production is incredibly sensitive to many environmental factors and no one knows for sure why sperm count is decreasing globally. According to the World Health Organization, an average person has at least 20 million sperm in one ml of semen. When this count reduces to 15 million sperms per 1 ml of semen, the condition is said to be oligozoospermia, or low sperm count. Problems with conception start occurring when the ejaculate constitutes less than 40 million sperms in total. However, there is now plenty of research into a wide variety of environmental factors that decrease sperm count and the good news is that if you want to know how to increase sperm count, there are several home remedies to increase sperm count which you can try at home. Small changes in diet and lifestyle can change everything
What Causes Low Sperm Count
Oligospermia or low sperm count can happen due to a lot of different reasons. Some of these reasons are mentioned below:
- Damaged sperm duct
- Presence of infection in the prostate
- Infected semen
- Abnormalities in semen production
- Alcohol abuse
- Excessive smoking
- Toxic chemicals
- Exposure to radiation
- Certain medications
- Use of steroids
- STI such as trichomoniasis and chlamydia
Sometimes, even vaginal lubricants cab harm the sperms, decreasing the total count and inducing infertility.
Infertility in males can be a real problem for couples who wish to conceive a baby. If you are having trouble conceiving, it is always recommended to check your partner’s fertility as female infertility is also very common. Luckily, there are certain home remedies to increase sperm count which do not involve expensive procedures, harmful chemicals or indeed visits to the doctor. Small changes in lifestyle, diet, and exercise can make a huge difference in sperm count, motility, and morphology. Cases where the patient has been classified as almost infertile, have seen sperm count levels rise to almost normal levels just by adopting these simple home remedies.
It takes over ten weeks for new sperm to be produced, so diet and lifestyle changes will take at least two months to bear fruit. Home sperm test kits are now available and you should test at the start and end of this period. If you stick to the regime, you will be surprised by the results.
How to increase sperm count
- Vegetables rich in beta-carotene and lycopene
This has to be the easiest lifestyle change to make. A small change in diet goes a long way. Vegetables rich in beta carotene, such as carrots, lettuce, and spinach, can lead to an increased motility of sperm.
Likewise, vegetables rich in lycopene such as tomatoes improved sperm quality and morphology (the shape of the sperm). (15)
When researching how to increase sperm count at home, the first approach you should use is to change your diet to include a large intake of these vegetables. Very easy and simple.
However, changing your diet should not be used in isolation, but should be considered as the base starting point of your treatment.
Tribulus terrestris is considered among the most effective Ayurvedic home remedies to increase sperm count and quality. Also known as gokshura, it possesses certain aphrodisiac properties that can help in overcoming oligozoospermia.
The fruits are considered to act as a diuretic and aphrodisiac; they used for urolithiasis, sexual dysfunctions, and research has shown they are also beneficial to sperm count. (1)
When taken orally, this herb can increase the level of testosterone in the body. Be sure to consult your doctor before using it, though.
- Aerobic Exercise
Aerobic exercise is considered among the top home remedies to increase sperm count. Participating in aerobic exercises can help improve the overall wellness of the body. This helps to reduce stress and make metabolism better. Both of these factors directly contribute to increased sperm count. (2)
Additionally, this remedy will also provide your tissues a chance to oxygenate better.
Damiana is a famous flowering shrub that is said to be rich in different oils as well as phytochemicals such as triterpenoids, phenolics, flavonoids, and glycosides.
Considered among useful home remedies for fertility, some species of damiana even contains some level of caffeine. It is also said to possess anxiolytic properties which also controls your stress levels. It will calm your nerves, prevent mental exhaustion and relax your muscles.
In order to use damiana, take one-fourth teaspoon of this herb in dried form and add it to a cup of water. Boil the solution for up to 10 minutes and strain it. You can add a bit of honey to sweeten the taste. Use it thrice every day for some months.
Ashwagandha root extract is said to be among effective home remedies to increase sperm count in addition to increasing the volume of semen and motility of the sperms. Ashwagandha improves fertility by increasing the levels of testosterone production in the body. The herb also possesses a capability to improve the overall health. (3)
Plus, this herb promotes healthy testosterone production. It also improves your overall health, increases vitality and reduces stress and anxiety. In order to use ashwagandha, mix half a teaspoon of it in powdered form in warm milk. Drink this solution twice every day for some months.
- Avoid cycling
Numerous studies have shown that excessive cycling, especially endurance cycling, reduces male fertility. Semen analysis during one study consisted of a detailed evaluation of sperm characteristics that included semen volume, sperm count, viability, motility, and morphology. (4)
Compared to a controlled group, cyclists showed a significantly lower proportion of spermatozoa with normal morphology. The reason put forward was that the pressure applied on the scrotum from tight cycling gear and the increase in scrotum temperature reduce the ability of the testes to produce quality sperm.
- Panax Ginseng
Panax Ginseng is a traditional Chinese medicine that makes it easy for the body to adapt to stress. It is among some really important home remedies for fertility that works by increasing testosterone levels. As testosterone levels rise, the sperm count and motility are enhanced immediately. Additionally, this herb can also make your erectile performance better.
Research has shown that Ginseng improves sperm motility, count, and morphology as well as increasing the life of the sperm post ejaculation. What’s more, it acts as a powerful aphrodisiac.(5)
In case you are considering to try panax ginseng out, remember to take complete information about its different types. This is because all ginsengs available in the market are not the same and their effects may vary in potency.
- Keep Testicles Cool
There is a reason why your testicles hang away from the body and it is because they need constant temperature regulation. Sperm cells present in testicles are very sensitive to temperature change and are immediately destroyed when exposed excessive heat.
Overheating of testicles can occur due to a number of reasons. These reasons may include hot baths, saunas, infections, tight underwear, synthetic material and sitting in a heated area for long. In certain occupations like taxi or truck driving, overheating of testicles is possible as these professions involve sitting in the same posture for a long time. Avoiding these causes of overheating can help you prevent a low sperm count and infertility because of it.
Avoid hot baths and saunas and wear underwear made of cotton or natural fiber to maintain a cool temperature. Riding a bike on a regular basis or wearing tight clothes can also trigger an increase in the testicular heat on a temporary basis. The use of laptop must also be limited in men as its batteries are able to transfer heat to the testicles.
- Manage Stress
Stress is said to be an emotional state which usually occurs due to increasing demands of the life events. These demands may be psychological or physical and are usually said to be greater than your ability to successfully cope with them. High level of stress is something that can deteriorate your health and lower your sperm count, so controlling stress is a great home remedy for fertility. (6)
Stress can be managed using different techniques. You can always start off by indulging yourself in some meditation practices. Meditation is responsible for changing the neural pathways to make you strong and manage stress well. Breathe deeply whenever you get a chance as it will lower your heart rate and blood pressure in order to manage stress.
Lastly, keep your body well rested. Take a break from your hectic routine and give time to yourself. A relaxed body means a relaxed mind and a relaxed mind increases your fertility levels like nothing else.
- Stay Hydrated
Water is said to be an important component and one of the most essential home remedies for fertility. It is important to maintain normal metabolism within a living cell. It is essential for an average man to drink about 4 liters of fluid every single day in order to prevent dehydration which can lead to a low sperm motor.
Semen is the watery base fluid of the ejaculate. It protects and feeds sperm cells and transports them during ejaculation. If you are dehydrated, semen quality is impaired and conception is less likely
You can also use different beverages and drinks in order to compensate for your water loss. However, avoid drinking too many alcoholic or artificially sweetened drinks as both artificial sweeteners and alcohol have been linked to reduced sperm count.
Remember to drink at least 2 liters of water daily
Zinc is said to be among the most commonly used home remedies for fertility in males. Numerous studies have shown how zinc has successfully been able to increase sperm count in males for as high as 74 percent. Zinc is necessary for the normal production of sperm. So, be sure to incorporate foods rich in zinc in your daily diet. (7)
Yes, it is time for you to literally go bananas over bananas as it is said to be a sperm increasing food. Why you should be choosing bananas is because they are rich in so many nutrients. This means that eating them will not only increase the sperm production, it will also make you healthier and fitter.
Bananas are also said to have a particular enzyme named as bromelain that is essential for regulation of sex hormones. Hence, eating them will increase the sperm count. Additionally, bananas also have vitamin A, B and C so eating it raw or adding it in mashed form into your favorite smoothies can help you a lot.
- Monitor your Alcohol Intake
Alcohol is said to have an inflammatory effect on the body’s tissues. It works as a form of stress which is said to reduce the sperm count in your body. Hence, monitoring your alcohol intake and reducing it successfully will allow you to suffer from less inflammation. For this reason, it is considered among the best natural home remedies to increase sperm count.
Alcohol as also been shown to effect the hormonal cells that produce testosterone, reducing testosterone levels throughout the body. This indirectly pushes your sperm count lower. (8)
- Reduce Masturbation
Many people wonder whether masturbation can cause low sperm count. It stands to reason that masturbation can decrease the percentage of sperm in ejaculate. This is mainly because, after the previous cohort leaves, testes need to work all over again to rebuild the sperms.
More ejaculations mean that the sperm count will be reduced in each of them. So, you can count reduction of masturbation as one of the natural home remedies for fertility improvement in males.
Pomegranates are said to be a rich source of antioxidants. These antioxidants are responsible for binding to the reactive species of oxygen which are produced as a byproduct of different metabolic processes occurring in the body.
Moreover, these antioxidants also work effectively to decrease malondialdehyde which is harmful to sperm. (9) In addition to being among the top home remedies for fertility, pomegranates also have a lot of other benefits. These include improved blood circulation, energy boost and prevention of diseases. Try having fresh pomegranate juice without any added sugar.
- Stop Smoking
Smoking has a broad range of negative effects on your body. The effects of smoking on sperm count are well documented and researched.(10) If you want to know how to increase sperm count in the fastest way, giving up smoking has to have the most dramatic effect.
Quitting smoking will not only increase your sperm count but will also prevent the production of abnormal sperms. People who smoke are said to have a low volume of oxygen in their bloodstream as compared to those who don’t and this is an important determinant of overall health.
- Honey Goat Weed
Horny goat weed is said to have a natural power to increase the sperm count and the fertility levels in males. It contains the compound Icariin which has been shown in studies to increase sperm count and improve sexual functions in rats.(11)
The herb has a history of being used in the traditional Chinese medicine. Horny Goat Weed is also said to have aphrodisiac properties which make it as a perfect fit among other home remedies to increase sperm count.
- Green Tea
Green tea is a fantastic and among the most effective home remedies to increase sperm count in addition to having various other health benefits.
Green tea contains a compound known as theanine which particularly helps to increase the sperm count and motility.
In addition to this, theanine can also reduce the occurrence of sperm aberrations. (12)
- Maca Root
Maca root can work against infertility and low sperm count owing to its hormone balancing properties, particularly testosterone. It is said to improve the sexual desire in males as well.
A recent study into the benefits of consuming Maca supplements did not find any improvement in sperm concentration or total sperm count but reported a statistically significant increase of motile sperm and of normal sperm morphology.(13)
In order to use maca root among other home remedies for fertility, take 1 to 3 tablespoons of this herb, divide it into two doses and take it along with a glass of water. You can also add it in your protein shake or smoothie and can also sprinkle some of it on the cereal. Be sure to start taking half a teaspoon in the beginning and work your way up over a few weeks because maca root has a high fiber content. Follow this remedy for a few months to observe effects.
- Reduce cell phone time and usage
Use of cell phones has long been suspected of causing a host of physical ailments and it was only a matter of time until someone looked at sperm count effects.
A study by the Department of Quantitative Health at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation found a direct link between sperm count, motility, and morphology, with decreases observed in all three metrics for those patients who had high cell phone usage. (14)
The proximity of most people’s cell phones to their groin area (i.e. in their pocket) exposes the sperm to electromagnetic energy within the radio spectrum. There is clear observational evidence that sperm do not like this exposure.
- Start using organic food
- Get proper sleep
- Get your weight under control
- Don’t wear tight clothes
- Avoid using plastic bottles and other items to decrease xenoesterogen exposure.
- Reduce your anxiety levels
- Do not smoke, drink or take drugs while trying to conceive.

The post 24 Home Remedies for Spider Bites appeared first on Natural Home Remedies - DIY treatment for Better Health.]]> Being bitten by a spider is often a scary and painful experience but there are several quick and effective home remedies for spider bites that can help treat spider bites symptoms immediately. There are many different types of spiders. In North America alone there are some 3,000 different species. Most, like the Common House Spider, Grass Spiders or Long-bodied Cellar Spiders – are harmless and of no risk to humans. However, some spiders have a venomous and sometimes deadly bite. The good news is that there are only really four types of venomous spider in North America, with two types far more common than the others. The two to look out for are Recluse Spiders and the Widows and if bitten or are showing symtoms from these spiders’ bites, you should seek medical attention. However, for less venomous spiders, you can treat spider bites at home using our home remedies.
Spider Bites Symptoms
Most spiders never intentionally bite and only do so if they feel threatened, are disturbed or pressed up against human skin by accident. When found in peoples’ homes they favor building webs in dry and quiet spots such as sheds and cupboards which are thought to mimic the tree bark they favor in the wild. However, spiders are sometimes found in shoes, laundry and bed sheets of lesser used guest rooms.
The severity of the bite is in part due to an individual’s immune system and age, with the very young and elderly being more susceptible than other healthy humans. Spider bite symptoms vary and range from a slight redness and mild irritation to severe pain, inflammation and in some cases hospitalization.
The symptoms of spider bites depend on the spider species. Non-poisonous spider bites may cause mild irritation and as mentioned above the more venomous bites can cause severe effects. Some of the symptoms of spider bites include:
- Mild to severe pain
- Swelling around the bitten area
- High blood pressure
- Excessive sweating
- Muscle spasms
- Joint pain
- Dilated pupils
The black widow spider bite symptoms will include the more serious of the symptoms above and if you suspect a bite from a black widow, seek medical attention. The symptoms of the brown recluse spider bite are different slightly different because the venom can cause necrosis of the skin. The bite area may well blister at first, which develops into an open sore, with finally a breakdown of tissue a week or so after the bite as the necrosis sets in. Again medical attention should be sort.

The post 22 Fantastic Home Remedies for Female Infertility appeared first on Natural Home Remedies - DIY treatment for Better Health.]]> Getting pregnant is one of the most soul-satisfying experiences for a woman. Enjoying motherhood and raising a family is what every woman dreams of. If you have decided to try for a baby, you surely want it to happen as fast as possible. As such, female infertility is a horrible and distressing condition. For some women, it is easy to get pregnant while some have to be patient for a long time. On average, a woman is most likely to conceive during the first six months of continuous trying. However, things don’t work out to be the same for everyone, for some of you may need to strive hard because of fertility issues. There are many causes of female infertility and you should really consult your doctor to determine whether medical treatment is required. However, there are many simple home remedies for female infertility that can help you get pregnant fast. They can be used alongside traditional treatments and will boost your chances of conceiving naturally.
Causes of female infertility
There are a lot of reasons why women fail to get pregnant despite trying hard. These reasons can include anything from a simple hormonal imbalance to a major pathological disease. Some of the most common causes of fertility issues are mentioned below:
- General hormonal imbalance – Hormones regulate periods and ovulation. An imbalance can disrupt both
- Short duration of Luteal Phase – The luteal phase is the post-ovulatory portion of a woman’s cycle. During this phase, any fertilized egg will attach itself to the uterine lining. If the phase is too short, fertilized eggs often fail to attach.
- Insufficient Luteinizing Hormone – A natural surge during the cycle of this hormone initiates ovulation and stimulates other hormones which help the fertilized egg attach to the uterine wall. If the surge is insufficient, ovulation may not occur.
- Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome – is a condition in which a woman’s levels of estrogen and progesterone are out of balance. The hormonal imbalance leads to the growth of ovarian cysts which can lower fertility
- High concentration of Prolactin – High levels of the hormone prolactin in the blood can suppress ovulation. Breastfeeding raises prolactin levels and explains low pregnancy rates for breastfeeding moms.
- Presence of anovulatory cycles – During an anovulatory cycle, insufficient quantities of the hormone progesterone are produced which can prevent ovulation, yet may still lead to heavy bleeding. This bleeding is often mistaken for a normal period, yet no egg is produced.
- Endometriosis – Endometriosis is a condition where the lining of the uterus, called the endometrium, grows in the wrong place, such as the fallopian tubes or ovaries. When this lining is shed as would happen in a normal period, it has nowhere to go and can cause heavy cramps, cysts, and reduced fertility.
- Blocked fallopian tubes – Mucus and other debris can often block the fallopian tubes, preventing an egg reaching the uterine wall. This can prevent pregnancy or worse, lead to an ectopic pregnancy.
- Pelvic inflammatory disease – PID is an infection of the upper genital tract which includes the womb, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. If the infection is left untreated, scarring can occur which can prevent the eggs traveling through the fallopian tubes and thus lowers fertility.
Age and lack of proper nutrition can also be the cause of low fertility.
Experiencing problems with fertility can prove to be emotionally painful for any woman. It can also lead to several other problems such as isolation, anxiety, depression and lack of concentration.
If you find yourself constantly struggling to get pregnant, there is good news. You can follow some easy home remedies to get pregnant fast. These home remedies for fertility are not only simple and cheap but are all natural, so your body would not be exposed to any harm.

The post 13 Home Remedies To Get Rid of Slugs From Your Home And Garden appeared first on Natural Home Remedies - DIY treatment for Better Health.]]> Slugs have always been the gardener’s most hated pest. The 27000 teeth that a slug possesses, make quick work of almost any vegetation in your garden, and the little critters leave a slimy trail as calling card, almost as if to mock. Yet slugs, not content with ravishing your lettuce bed, will often find their way into your home, searching for food as ever, and defiling your rugs and carpets with their sticky trails. Active mostly at night, a slug’s trail to greet you in the morning is never a welcome sight, especially if in your home. Many find the shell-less mollusk quite repulsive and to get rid of slugs in your home is a priority. However, there is some comfort. You can get rid of slugs using home remedies which are natural, effective and safe. What’s more, there are home remedies for slugs for your home as well as remedies to get rid of slugs from your garden. Check them out.
How to get rid of slugs in your home
Slugs are the same everywhere, inside or out in your garden. While some remedies suit both, some remedies are home specific slug drivers.
1) Trace And Seal
Unless you know where from these critters enter your house, it will not be possible to completely get rid of them. Follow the slimy trails they leave behind and identify their entry points. Seal all gaps with appropriate sealants. Smaller gaps can be sealed with silicone sealant and for larger gaps you can use expanding foams. Copper tapes also work for preventing slugs from creeping in.
If you have made up your mind to kill slugs, salt is the effective way if not the best way. Salt’s property to absorb water aids in dehydrating the slugs by drawing the water in them thereby killing them . Throw salt on the critters and they will die quickly. However, it can be extremely agonizing for slugs. You can also spread some salt in the entry points to prevent slugs getting inside.
3) Beer Trap
This is one interest slug shares with you. Yes, slugs love beer and are drawn towards it and they love stale beer more . Fill 2/3rds of a cup with beer and place it where you normally find slugs at night. When slugs climb into the cup they not only get drunk but also get drowned. Empty the cup and follow the procedure till you find none of these critters at home.
4) Lure And Discard
This is an appealing solution to those who are not up to killing slugs. Set up your bait such as pet food or cabbage leaves. Check at night to find a good number of slugs on the planks eating the food. Gather them and discard them far away from your house as well as others’.
How to get rid of slugs in your garden
Everyone who knows how many times a slug reproduces would want to get the critters out immediately on spotting them. Slugs can damage your garden to such an extent that you will, at least temporarily, give up ‘non-violence’ and look for ways to get rid of them even if it means that you will have to kill them. Here are some effective ways to check them on their tracks.
5) Set Traps
Set up a trap with beer or cabbage leaves or honey yeast mixture. Slugs love them and will crawl in to eat them. Just make sure your trap, meaning plastic cup is deep enough to make it difficult for the slugs to climb out.
You can also use orange peels to lure slugs. Put these peels in your garden. Dispose of these peels if you find slugs in them. Replace with fresh orange peels.
Grapefruit halves make great traps. Place the half grapefruit on the ground making some space for slugs to crawl in. You will find slugs in your grapefruit in the morning. Dispose of the grapefruit with the slugs and make fresh traps.
This sure is not an easy way to go about chucking critters out but it is definitely very productive. If you have a good number of slugs damaging your garden it is essential that you resort to more than one means to deal with them. With hand-picking, the job is done to perfection. And doing it day and night produces quicker results. If you are working on it at night, set out with a flashlight and a bucket with salt water. Pick up the slugs and throw them into the salt water. Dispose of them once the task is accomplished.
However, don’t really hand-pick. Wear your gloves or use any device that may help with your ‘hand-picking’.
There seems no remedy exists without garlic. From health conditions to repelling roaches and slugs, garlic has an important role to play. Garlic is highly effective in preventing slugs . It is a green technique and hence your plants and pets are safe. To make a garlic spray, put crushed garlic in a bowl. Add boiled water to it and keep it covered overnight. Filter and pour the garlic water in a spray and apply directly on the plants. You can make your garlic spray highly concentrated or weak based on the presence of slugs.
Spraying vinegar kills slugs. Salt water can also be sprayed but repeated use of salt may be harmful to your plants and hence use salt minimally.
Ammonia is a great slug killer. Mix ammonia and water in the ratio of 1:5 and pour it in a sprayer. Spray the solution in your garden to have more than one benefit. Ammonia kills slugs while at the same time is beneficial to your plants.
10) Set Scratchy Surfaces
Slugs avoid scratchy surfaces. Place crushed egg shells around your plants that need protection. This will keep slugs away while not killing them. You can also use diatomaceous earth, which is safe for plants and pets. Being sharp diatomaceous earth prevents slugs from getting near your plants but it is not very effective if it is wet.
11) Go For Companion Planting
The gardener in you will love the opportunity of growing more plants, particularly if they repel slugs. Here is a list of plants that you can grow to check slugs :
Mint repels slugs but they grow at an amazing speed that you will have a tough job controlling it. You may, however, grow mint in pots or chop mint leaves and place them around the plants targeted by slugs.
12) Divert And Prevent
Growing plants that slugs love is also an effective way of preventing slugs from attacking other plants. By planting red clover, marigold and lettuce you lure the slugs away from other precious plants .
13) Welcome Predators
Encourage natural predators to make your garden their home to get rid of slugs. Ducks, chickens, ground beetles, slow worms and toads are some of the predators that eat slugs . By allowing them to make your garden their habitat you will soon find slugs disappearing.
14) Use Coffee Grounds As Barrier
Coffee grounds repel slugs. It is believed that caffeine kills smaller slugs and repels the bigger ones . Sprinkle coffee grounds on the soil. You can also create a barrier with coffee grounds to safeguard plants that are specific targets for slugs.
11) Petroleum Jelly
Petroleum jelly is highly effective for preventing slugs from climbing on your plant pots. Smear petroleum jelly around your plant pot bases as well as the top so that slugs will be checked on tracks.
12) Save Your Fallen Hair
Yes, hair makes a great barrier to prevent critters from getting near your plants. Your pet’s fur will also serve the purpose but human hair works best. Throw the hair around plants that are targeted. Slugs will get tangled in the hair.
Slugs avoid crawling on sawdust as they become dehydrated . Wood ash can be mixed with sawdust to border the plants. Sawdust from natural wood that is untreated should only be used.
Tips To Prevent Slugs
Here are some tips to check slug population.
1) Watering At The Right Time
If you have been watering your plants in the evening, it is high time you changed your schedule. Watering your garden in the evening creates the perfect atmosphere for slugs to thrive as your garden will be damp. To control slugs your watering schedule should be shifted to the morning hours so that the soil gets dry towards evening.
2) Uncover Hiding Spots
Since slugs love cool and dark places and hide there, you can begin with getting rid of slugs’ hiding spots. Remove compost from the garden as slugs love it. Cut off leaves that touch the ground or are very close to it.
3) Morning And Evening Walks aka Hunting Times
Visit your garden in the morning and evening so that you can assess slug levels. This is also the time you can ‘hand-pick’ slugs thereby greatly reducing their numbers.

The post 25 Home Remedies For Fire Ant Bites appeared first on Natural Home Remedies - DIY treatment for Better Health.]]> Fire ants originated in Brazil, but have become established in the US, spreading throughout the southern states. Fire ants are certainly well named as they are famed for their searingly painful bite. I say bite, but it is actually a sting that causes the pain. The fire ant will bite down with its mandibles, anchoring its body, before injecting venom through its stinger attached at the end of its abdomen. A sting by fire ant causes severe pain that is short-lived, but the pain is replaced by long lasting itching that may be intense. In rare cases, fire ants can cause death in humans as the toxin is similar in chemistry to a bee or wasp sting and may cause an allergic reaction. Unlike most ants whose venom is formic acid, the fire ant venom is alkaline and the fire ant bite treatments below reflect this important fact. If you need fire ant bite treatment, then take a look at our home remedies for fire ant bites as they will neutralize the venom and reduce the inflammation and itching.
Symptoms of fire ant bites and stings
Fire ants attack en masse, in huge numbers to hunt their prey or when their nest has been disturbed or is under threat. Each ant will sting multiple times, causing circular clustered lesions on the skin. The ant will rotate in a circle, stinging as it goes, before its venom is exhausted.
The fire ant bit and sting will first show up on the skin as a red welt. The sheer number of ants that may attack can produce multiple red spots that look similar to hives. The red bump will appear after a few hours and then after about a day, the red bump will become a small blister with white pus. The severity of the symptoms will depend on the individual as some are more sensitive to the venom than others.
For most, the red bumps/blisters will just be painful at first and extremely itchy for a few days afterward. It is very important that you resist the temptation to scratch as infections from fire ant bites are very common. Some the of home remedies for fire ant bites included below are anti-bacterial for this reason. The bite area should always be kept as clean as possible. Scratching will also increase the chance that the blisters scar when healed.
For some people, a more severe reaction may occur to the fire ant venom. Swelling around the bite area is common and while swelling that extends beyond the bite area may also occur. If there is a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of fire ant bites may be:
- chest tightness
- breathing difficulty
- swelling of throat and tongue, with difficulty swallowing.
These symptoms of fire ant bite are the first signs of anaphylactic shock and medical attention should be sort immediately as drops in blood pressure, unconsciousness and cardiac arrest may occur.
Fire Ant Bite Treatment
The treatment of fire ant bites is quite simple and has three stages.
- Clean the affected area
- Neutralize the venom with a mild acid
- Reduce Inflammation
Before you get started with using natural remedies, clean the affected area with cold water and soap. For all fire ant bite treatments, you must avoid infection and try to keep the bite blisters that form clean until healed. When you are applying anti inflammatory home remedies for ant bites, you don’t want the remedies mixed up with dirt and bacteria. You want a sterile environment.
When the bite area is clean, you need to neutralize the venom. Most biting ants will inject venom via their mandibles and the venom they inject is formic acid. Any acid can be neutralized with alkaline based solutions such as ammonia and baking soda, and for most ant bites, this is the best treatment.
Fire ants venom, however, is delivered via their stinger on their abdomen similar to a wasp sting, and the venom that is delivered is alkaline. You should not use alkaline based home remedies for fire ant bites. Some alkaline home remedies, such as ammonia and bleach will help break down some of the proteins in the venom and will provide some relief, but they will not lower the PH for instant pain relief. For this, you must use the acid based home remedies listed below.
Indeed, rival ant species such as the crazy ant have worked this out for themselves and use their formic acid to neutralize the fire ants alkaline venom (19). The same principle can be applied with any mild acid.
Finally, when the bite area is clean and the venom is neutralized, you need to apply soothing anti-inflammatory remedies. These will reduce the itching that comes after the initial bite pain has gone. Many of the remedies listed below also are anti-bacterial which will help prevent infection.
Home Remedies for Fire Ant Bites
There are two broad categories of fire ant bite home remedies. Remedies which are acidic that neutralize the alkaloids in the venom, and remedies that relieve inflammation. We have grouped them accordingly:

Apply raw honey to the affected skin. Rinse off after 30 minutes in cold water. Repeat if necessary. The best honey to use for fire ant bites is manuka honey as this honey has the lowest PH.
External use of aspirin helps to relieve pain and inflammation caused by fire ant stings. The ph of aspirin when in solution is quite low at 2-3 so it is as acidic as vinegar. Aspirin applied topically will also give mild pain relief as it is analgesic.

The post 7 Essential Home Remedies for Scoliosis appeared first on Natural Home Remedies - DIY treatment for Better Health.]]> Scoliosis is a nasty condition where the spine develops an abnormal level of curvature. Most people who people who have the condition will show only slight curvature and may not even know they are suffering, dismissing their back pains as no more than an annoying ache. However, for serious curvatures, the condition is not only visible in one’s posture but also has several complications which can progress with age. Scoliosis treatment ranges from a ‘do nothing, wait and see’ approach to full spinal surgery, complete with bracing to correct the problem. However, research has shown that there are home remedies for scoliosis which will allow you to manage your scoliosis treatment at home, and, irrespective of whether the condition is severe or mild, our home remedies for scoliosis will help alleviate the symptoms and should be used in conjunction with your scoliosis treatment plan. They do not offer a scoliosis cure, but they do help you lead a more, if not totally normal life.
What is scoliosis
Scoliosis is a musculoskeletal disorder that involves a sideways curvature (typically S- or C- shaped) of the spine or backbone (1). There is often no specific cause for this condition and it usually occurs when children are growing rapidly as they reach puberty (2).
Scoliosis is more common in girls than boys, and occasionally runs in families. Its symptoms, which are often difficult to observe, include the tendency to lean towards a particular side and the possession of uneven shoulders, waist and hips.
Researchers are still studying how genetics, growth patterns and changes in the spine, nerves and muscles contribute to idiopathic scoliosis, as well as the efficacy of different treatment plans in preventing the curvature from increasing and in assisting the straightening of the spine.
Doctors will classify the curvature as either nonstructural (when the spine is normal and structure and the curve is only temporary) or structural (when the spine has a fixed curve as a result of an injury, disease, infection or birth defect) (3).
While individuals with milder forms of scoliosis may only need to undertake periodic exams with their doctor every now and then, individuals with more severe curves (which can become progressively worse) may require treatment.
After diagnosing an individual with scoliosis via an x ray of the spine, a physical examination and a review of the patient’s medical history, doctors will prescribe a treatment plan based on the individual’s age, the type of scoliosis, the degree, location and pattern of the curve, and how much more physical growth he or she is projected to undergo (4). The doctor will suggest the best treatment for each patient based on the patient’s age, how much more he or she is likely to grow, the degree and pattern of the curve, and the type of scoliosis.
When the curve is mild (i.e. the Cobb angle of the spine is less than 25 degrees) and the patient is still growing, doctors will usually opt to make further observations over the following months. On the other hand, patients with moderate spinal curvature may be encouraged to wear a brace to stop the curve from becoming worse over time. Finally, patients with severe curves (i.e. greater than 40 to 50 degrees) that are getting worse will typically be advised to undergo surgery to correct it (5). This surgery may involve fusing two or more bones in the spine together, or the insertion of a metal rod or implants to help the spine remain straight after surgery.
For those who are interested in considering a non-surgical treatment plan to alleviate their condition, here are a few alternative treatment procedures that can alleviate some of the complications associated with scoliosis:
Home remedies for scoliosis
- Physiotherapy Scoliosis Specific Exercises (PSSE)
Home remedies for scoliosis start with specialized exercises. There are many customised scoliosis exercises designed to alleviate the symptoms of the condition. Many nations have different approaches and there have been studies examining the efficacy of each approach. (6). While the specifications of each treatment approach varied, they all aimed to treat scoliosis by realigning the spine, rib cage, shoulders and pelvis to ‘normal’ anatomical postures.
Research has indicated that Physiotherapy Scoliosis Specific Exercises (PSSE) can help to temporarily stabilize progressive scoliosis curves. (7).
For incidents of non-progressive scoliosis, the regular practice of PSSE can result in a temporary and significant reduction of the Cobb angle. Besides a reduction in the Cobb angle, PSSE can also improve back asymmetry, and alleviate secondary muscle imbalances and scoliosis-associated pain. Individuals afflicted with severe cases of thoracic scoliosis can also experience an improvement in breathing function.
Individuals afflicted with severe cases of thoracic scoliosis can also experience an improvement in breathing function. The exercises help to change the soft tissue that affect the spine, and are believed to alleviate scoliosis by changing the control of spinal movement.
While more research is needed to ascertain the extent of their efficacy, there are no known risks or side effects of practicing PSSEs (8).
Although many PSSEs can be done at home on your own as part of your everyday routine, it is recommended that patients work with a team that includes at least a physical therapist, and an orthopaedic doctor to create a personalized exercise routine that addresses the specific nature of the patient’s spine condition. The exercises should be tailored to correct a patient’s pelvis position and spine, as well as to improve posture and strengthen any weak muscles.
- Core Strengthening Exercises
You can also benefit from general core-strengthening exercises. While they will not reduce the size of the spine curve, they can help prevent the curve from worsening. A stronger core helps to support your spine and help it maintain a neutral position. It also helps your abdominal and lower back muscles to balance and stabilize your posture more effectively.
A 2017 study of South Korean students with idiopathic scoliosis who participated in a 12-week core stabilization exercise demonstrated a signature decrease in the lumbar Cobb angle, as well as a significant increase in lumbar flexor and extensor muscles strength (there was no significant difference in their thoracic Cobb angle, however) (10).
- A Healthy Diet
Although scoliosis is not caused by malnutrition or a poor diet, maintaining a healthy and balanced diet can help alleviate some of its symptoms (12). Maintaining a normal body weight is also very important for individuals with the condition. Obesity and overweightedness can aggravate back pain and discomfort as the discs in the spine absorb the shock from the additional weight.
An active lifestyle, a normal body weight and a diet that contains all the typical daily nutritional requirements will help to alleviate the discomfort and pain associated with the condition.
- A healthy gut
A healthy gut does not seem a likely home remedy for scoliosis. However, imbalanced gut bacteria have been shown to have an effect on many physiological processes in the body from cognitive functions to immune health. Inflammatory diseases like irritable bowel syndrome have also been shown to be linked with the balance of our gut bacteria. This is where the link to scoliosis comes from. Avoiding inflammation at pressure points in the spine is critical for alleviating the pain associated with scoliosis. Reducing auto-immune responses of the body, which cause inflammation across the whole body, often starts in the gut.
Try and eat as many probiotics and prebiotics as possible to maintain your gut balance. You may even find that a diet rich in these foods is an effective weight-loss program.
- Anti-inflammatory supplements
In addition to healthy diet complete with prebiotics/probiotics, you should also consider foods that are known for their anti-inflammatory properties as well as considering supplements.
The spice turmeric contains the active ingredient curcumin which is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Also, the supplement methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a widely used supplement which aids in lowering chronic back pain and inflammation of the joints and can help to treat the symptoms of scoliosis.
Likewise, there are many essential oils that can be used to manage inflammation from scoliosis that can be applied topically to relieve the pain. In particular, consider taking fish oil as a supplement which has long been known for its benefits for joints and bones.
- Preserving Bone Health
Older patients may need to pay particular attention to their bone health, however, since osteoporosis can cause the progression of scoliosis (13). More attention towards one’s calcium intake is needed in older age, since the body becomes less efficient at absorbing calcium and other nutrients. Postmenopausal women, older men, pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding typically have greater calcium needs.
Vitamin D, sunshine and weight-bearing activities that prevent the loss of bone density may be required to avoid any bony abnormalities that will aggravate the symptoms of scoliosis.
As such, a diet rich in protein, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D, C and K, zinc, manganese and copper is encouraged (calcium and vitamin D are the nutrients that are most commonly deficient from individuals living in developed countries) (14).
While protein intake can increase the urinary excretion of calcium, consuming healthy amounts of protein is not detrimental to bone health so long as a 20:1 (mg calcium/g) calcium-to-protein ratio is achieved (15).
Vegetables and fruits can also help to reverse the loss of calcium via urine; caffeine intake should be reduced since it decreases calcium absorption from the gut.
Good food sources of calcium include low-fat dairy products (e.g. milk, yogurt, cheese, and ice cream); dark green and leafy vegetables (e.g. broccoli, collard greens, bok choy, and spinach); sardines and salmon with bones; tofu, almonds, and foods fortified with calcium (e.g. orange juice, cereals, and breads) (16).
If you are unable to obtain your daily calcium requirements from your food intake, a calcium supplement may be necessary.
- Chiropractic Rehabilitation
While research on the long-term efficacy of exercise-based therapies in treating scoliosis is generally lacking, a 2011 retrospective review of 28 patients who were prescribed the same chiropractic rehabilitation program and examined throughout a 24-month long-term follow-up found that 22 patients experienced Cobb angle reductions (17). All curvatures types registered improvements in pain scores and disability ratings.
- Work regularly on the Physiotherapy Scoliosis Specific Exercise program you have developed with your physical therapist
- Maintain a healthy diet with ample amounts of calcium, fruits and vegetables
- Get enough exposure to sunlight for vitamin D
- Exercise regularly to prevent the loss of bone density and to maintain a healthy weight
- Be conscious of your posture at all times
- Avoid caffeine, since it can reduce calcium absorption
- Avoid long periods of inactivity
- Cigarettes and alcohol, which compromises bone health
- Avoid medications that contribute to bone loss, e.g. glucocorticoids, anti-seizure drugs (e.g. phenytoin and barbiturates), gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) drugs, antacids, and excessive thyroid hormones if possible

There are typically three different types of lice that are known to feed on humans which include head lice, body lice, and pubic lice. Known as Phthirus pubis in scientific terms, public lice feed on human blood causing severe itching in the infected area. While crabs are not considered a sexually transmitted disease (STD), these insects are usually found in public hair and are often spread through sexual contact. In very rare cases, you may also find these lice in armpit hair, eyelashes, and facial hair. Public lice are much smaller in size as compared to the other two types. If you want to a fast pubic lice treatment, then our home remedies to get rid of pubic lice are a good place to start.
How do you get Pubic Lice?
People who are sexually active are more prone to getting infected by pubic lice. Similarly, those who have certain sexually transmitted diseases such as trichomoniasis, gonorrhea, chlamydia etc or infections are also more prone to attack.
The most common way in which public lice or crabs can be transferred from one person to another is through intimate contact which also includes sexual intercourse. All laundry such as towels, blankets, clothing or sheets of the infected person can also be a source of transmitting pubic lice to other people who use them.
Adult lice are said to move close to the skin at the hair shaft in order to lay eggs. These eggs are also known as nits. Nits usually hatch 7 to 10 days later and nymphs are born. As soon as the nymphs come out of their shells, they immediately start sucking the blood out of your body. These little creatures can successfully manage to live inside your pubic hair without food for up to 2 days.
Unlike a popular belief, there is no probability of you acquiring a pubic lice infestation through furniture or a toilet seat. This is because these lice do not fall off the body of their host while they are still alive. They are also not capable of jumping from one person to another, unlike fleas.
Children must be taken special care of as they can get infested by these insects more easily. In children who typically don’t have pubic hair, pubic lice prefer living in the eyebrows or the eyelashes.
Pubic Lice Symptoms
People infected with pubic lice frequently experience itching in the area surrounding their genitals or even anus. The itching attack tends to start at least 5 days after the infestation. Itching becomes more intense during the night. Some of the other common signs of a pubic lice infestation include the following:
- Swollen genitals
- Lack of energy
- Low-grade fever
- Pale blue spots surrounding the bites
Sometimes, excessive itching leads to the formation of wounds. These wounds can even take up any infection. In children, pubic lice may even lead to conjunctivitis (pink eye).
Do you consider yourself as a victim of these nasty pubic lice? We’ve got you covered. Keep reading to know about some amazing home remedies to get rid of pubic lice that will help say goodbye to lice for good.
Home Remedies to get rid of Pubic Lice
- Peppermint Oil
The first place to start if you want to get rid of pubic lice is to try out peppermint oil. This miraculous essential oil is popular for its supportive effects on the process of digestion. However, it can turn out to be one of the best home remedies for pubic lice if used accordingly.
According to a research study, peppermint oil is rich in certain substances including phenols, ketones, oxides and phenolic ethers. The presence of these substances induces a toxic effect on pubic lice.
Using this oil will soothe your skin and can also alleviate dandruff and dryness in addition to pubic lice. Pubic lice do not seem to survive in the cooling effect provided by peppermint oil and are hence, killed.
So, you can always count on peppermint oil as one of the most effective home remedies for pubic lice. Add it to your bubble bath and enjoy its soothing effects that will alleviate itching in no time.
- Tea Tree Oil
Use of tea tree oil as a pubic lice treatment is well documented by different researchers. Derived from Melaleuca tree, tea tree oil is said to possess natural antifungal and antiseptic properties. While it is commonly used in face washes to fight back, chest and face acne and in ointments for nail fungus, its role in killing off pubic lice cannot be neglected.
A study suggests the high efficacy ratio of tea tree oil in getting rid of lice and preventing further infestations, ultimately rendering it as one of the best home remedies for pubic lice. Tea tree oil can serve as an antiseptic to the affected area. It can also soothe insect bites present on the skin.
To use tea tree oil, take an appropriate amount of this oil and dilute it. The diluted form can then be massaged into the skin.
- Petroleum Jelly
Another addition to the most effective home remedies for pubic lice is petroleum jelly. It is completely safe to use and has a natural composition so, it does not leave chemical traces. You can easily use petroleum jelly on eyelashes, eyebrows and even on the head. Petroleum jelly works as a pubic lice treatment as it suffocates the lice and nymphs. Pubic lice and other insects don’t have lungs and instead, they breathe through a network of tiny tubes called tracheae. Air enters the tubes in their abdomen and this is what the petroleum jelly blocks, killing the lice.
The use of petroleum jelly for pubic lice has been justified by several types of research. A study indicates it among the most effective home remedies for pubic lice that do not involve any chemicals.
In order to use petroleum jelly for pubic lice, you must scoop out a generous amount and apply it directly to the pubic area. Let it stay for a few hours. Make sure that you cover the base of your pubic hair in order to remove nits along with the nymphs. It can then be washed using any shampoo, preferably the one with tea tree oil in it.
Vinegar is often mentioned as a part of the best home remedies for pubic lice. It has been scientifically proven that vinegar possesses certain properties that render it toxic and an effective pubic lice treatment.
In order to use vinegar for killing pubic lice, it is important to mix it with water in equal parts. Take a large cotton ball and dip it in the solution. You can then place it on the infected area and keep holding the ball against it for at least half an hour.
In case you suspect that the infestation has spread to other body parts, try mixing a whole bottle of vinegar in bath water and submerge your body in it for 30 minutes. If used properly, vinegar can successfully prove itself to be among the best home remedies for pubic lice.
- Margosa Leaves
Margosa leaves, also known as neem, are known for their strong anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties. Owing to these properties, Neem leaves are considered among the top home remedies for pubic lice. Even shampoos consisting of neem extracts are very effective in killing off pubic lice.
The best thing about this home remedy is that it is really easy to use and does not require much effort. All you got to do is fetch some neem leaves, add them to a pan filled with water and let it boil. The infusion formed during this process can be directly added to your bath water. Soak in this water for 30 minutes to get a relief from pubic lice and all the itching they cause.
Additionally, you can also grind these leaves with a little water to form a paste. The paste can be applied to the affected area to remove pubic lice along with nits. If you don’t want to grind the leaves, you can also use neem oil directly applied to the genital area. The essential oil carries all the insecticide properties of the ground leaf.
- Astringent Therapy
Astringent therapy is considered among the best home remedies for pubic lice mainly because it uses the acidic base to smother the lice. While there are a lot of astringents available in the market, you can manufacture your own right at your home. For preparing a perfect astringent, vinegar is considered to be the ideal base. One-fourth glass of vinegar can be mixed with an equal amount of water. You can add sugar, salt, and honey to the solution and mix it properly.
Make sure to keep the blend rough and thick in consistency. Keep including these components until you get a thick paste. Apply this mixture on pubic hair with the help of cotton and let it stay for half an hour. Wash your pubic area as soon as the paste dries out. For more effective results, you are required to get soaked in a bath with margosa leaves added to it.
- Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is acidic in nature and can help in killing off pubic lice in a rapid and effective manner. Considered as one of the best home remedies for pubic lice, lemon juice can be used by mixing a few tablespoons with sugar, salt and honey. The thick paste that forms can be applied directly to the affected area to get results.
This is considered as one of the simplest and fastest home remedies to get rid of pubic lice. All you need to do is to get a fine nit comb and use it to comb your pubic hair. The process of combing can be repeated several times. Don’t forget to sterilize the comb later to kill the pubic lice stuck into it.
- Always wash your bed sheets, undergarments, and other clothes in warm water and use disinfectant to clean them properly.
- Wash the affected area with warm water regularly.
- Pubic hair should be trimmed before using any home remedies for pubic lice.
- Refrain from sexual contact until you are fully cured.
- Avoid itching as it may cause wounds.
- Keep your nail short to prevent the spread of infections to other body parts.
